2025 Bullshot Regatta
January 12, 2025
The Bullshot Regatta went off on Sunday 1/12/25, although with a slight hitch; ice in the canal. With the temperature predicted for 39-40 degrees no one expected to see this when we got to the club. Since the temperature and winds were ideal, NW 7-8 knots (gusts to 9-10K) and we had an outgoing tide, we contemplated what to do.
With the determination of a true sailor, Patrick McCann suggested moving the race course further south and using the crash boat to break up the ice in the launch area. Thanks to Mike Cohen and Commodore John Queenan, the area was cleared and they were at the ready in case anyone capsized or needed assistance. (Two boats did capsize; one on land and the other at the dock with no one aboard.)
Ceil McCann braved the freezing temperatures and did a wonderful job as race committee. An experienced sailor, Jim Ranker, decided to add El Toros to his repertoire and I think he is hooked, too. It was a learning experience for some of us who have not sailed in icy conditions – if you happen to sail through the slushy ice, it slows you down quite a bit!
All-in-all, it was an exhilarating day and we are all ready to do it again next week. We would love to share this experience with everyone. There are boats available if you would like to try this exciting aspect of sailing not only because it is SO much fun, but it’s also pretty cool to be able to tell your friends that you sailed in January!!
