2023 El Toro North American Championships

RESULTS

We are planning a great year for El Toro sailors.  Plans are in the works for the Huntington Lake North American Championships. The Fresno Yacht Club, led by Dan Irwin, has worked with Susan and Tom Burden to coordinate almost all aspects of the event. The El Toro Class has reserved the Granite Group Campground (located in Rancheria). This spacious group camp has ten individual sites, available for free to regatta participants, first come, first served.

The Lakeshore Lodge is under new owners and will have cabins, RV campsites, a general store and a saloon back in operation, or so they tell us. You can reserve your own campsite through recreation.gov, but make your reservations early because they fill up fast. There are plenty of condos, which are reserved through Airbnb,  Vrbo or local realtors.

Regatta Chair Tom Burden is planning a tune-up event Thursday, July 27th from 9:30 am – 1:00 pm so equipment and sails can be traded to make boats go faster. Practice races will follow at 2:00 pm.

Huntington Lake is a great sailing experience.  Watches can be set by when the wind fills in.  The mornings are always still with the water flat but at exactly at 10 am the wind shows up. We can pick how much wind and wave action we want by placing the race course in different parts of the lake.  This lake’s wind generally is not very shifty. It can shift, but unlike Pinecrest or Merritt, this lake is logical. If the wind goes right it will go back to the standard direction without going into the other 350° of the compass.
